TAR’s FTHBAF Program Finishes the Year off Right March 1, 2007
One of the shining moments in a Telluride local’s life, other than epic powder days and an incredible lineup at Bluegrass, is when the opportunity to purchase a home in the region becomes a reality. Fortunately, those moments happen rather frequently on account of help and support from the Telluride Association of Realtors and its First Time Homebuyer’s Assistance Fund program. Since June 2002, TAR’s FTHBAF program has helped make dreams come true for locals by providing financial assistance toward the purchase of a first home. As successful as the past years have been, 2006 was no different as a total of $37,100 was awarded to first time homebuyers between January and December. From August through the end of the year, $11,500 was presented to 13 recipients in the form of 10 grants. Several recipients and some of the brokers they worked with (as pictured from left to right) include Jonathan Augello, Mike Plester & Sara Felton, Teddy Errico (Realtor), Heidi McDaniel, Asa Van Gelder (Realtor), Dylan Baer & Amy Bigelow, Stephanie Malsed, and Alison Swain. Those recipients not pictured include Christine Capaldo, Steve Brown, Angela Mallard, Scott Landefeld, Alan Hatfield, and Rex Lybrand. Since its inception in June 2002, TAR’s FTHBAF has donated upwards of $153,600 to 274 individuals in the form of 183 grants. And as applicant numbers continue to grow steadily, TAR and the brokerage community generously and enthusiastically rise to meet those numbers. “This is a great program for locals from locals,” said FTHBAF recipient Stephanie Malsed. “The assistance from TAR for my closing was a tremendous help and I appreciate everyone, as well as thank all who donate to this fund.” The money behind the FTHBAF program comes from several contributors, the largest of which are local Realtors/TAR members. Over 80% of Telluride area brokers voluntarily contribute a portion of every closed transaction to the program. This translates to roughly 200 brokers, employed by more than 20 brokerage firms, who repeatedly make donations. Donations are made in allocated increments taken from each closing; 100% of the monies granted are applied toward the FTHBAF recipient’s closing costs. Additionally, affiliate TAR members like Telluride Mountain Title, Alpine Title and Wells Fargo Home Mortgage financially contribute to the FTHBAF.Opening financial doors and thus enabling the core of the Telluride community to call it home for years to come solidifies and preserves the unique spirit and soul of this spectacular place. TAR recognizes, as well as identifies, with this fact and hopes the FTHBAF, paired with its other local programs, continue to help make this happen.“The underlying issue for us is that we remain a group and an association that is very strongly committed to finding housing solutions for our locals and keeping them in this community,” said TAR president Jim Lucarelli. “That’s really what it’s all about.” Those interested in applying for a FTHBAF grant, should contact TAR at 970.728.5172. All applications are due to the TAR office by the last Thursday of the month prior to the month of the property’s closing date. |
